Li Qiang Meets with IOC President Thomas Bach

On May 6, 2023, Premier Li Qiang of the State Council met with President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach at Ziguangge of Zhongnanhai.

Li Qiang said that since ancient times, the Olympic Movement has carried humanity's pursuit of peace, solidarity and progress. Faced with stern challenges posed by the combined forces of changes and a pandemic both unseen in a century, the IOC has kept in mind the original aspiration of the Olympic Movement, carried forward the Olympic spirit, acted on the purpose of the Olympic Movement, overcome various difficulties to further advance the Olympic Movement, and played a unique and significant role in maintaining world peace and promoting the progress of human civilization.

Li Qiang pointed out that China has always valued the development of sports, actively participated in international Olympic affairs, and carried out fruitful cooperation with the IOC for years. Last year in particular, Beijing became the world's first to host both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games, and presented the world with a streamlined, safe and splendid Winter Olympic Games. It successfully engaged 300 million Chinese in sports on snow and ice, greatly boosting the vigorous development of the sports industry. China never stops spreading the Olympic spirit and is willing to work with the IOC to oppose the politicization of sports and make new and greater contributions to the Olympic Movement and the building of a human community with a shared future.

Thomas Bach said that the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 has achieved incomparable success and left a precious legacy for the Olympics. He expressed gratitude to China for its long-term support to the IOC, and expressed the IOC's expectation of strengthening cooperation with China to encourage more people across the globe to participate in winter sports and boost the development of the Olympic Movement. China plays an important role in maintaining world peace and promoting common development. The IOC stands ready to uphold the Olympic spirit, resist politicization of sports, and promote humanity's mutual understanding and solidarity.
