2016-04-19 09:37

On April 19, 2016, President Xi Jinping met at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse with former Secretary of the Treasury Henry Paulson of the US.

Xi Jinping appreciated the positive efforts made by Henry Paulson and the Paulson Institute that he founded in promoting bilateral exchanges and cooperation. Xi Jinping pointed out that currently China-US relations enjoy a sound development in general. Achievements yielded from bilateral cooperation at bilateral, regional and global levels have shown strong vitality in the process of building a new model of major-country relationship between China and the US. This March, President Barack Obama and I reached important consensus on further promoting bilateral relations during the meeting in Washington D.C. In the next stage, the two countries should make joint efforts to strengthen communication, focus on cooperation and manage differences to push for sustainable, healthy and steady development of China-US relations.

Xi Jinping briefed Henry Paulson on China's economic situation, saying that China has ensured its economic and social development keeps steady yet forward despite the downward pressure of global economy. China's "13th Five-Year Plan" will adhere to the new vision of innovative, coordinated, green, open and shared development so as to strive for improvement in the quality and effectiveness of development. In particular, China will continue to advance supply-side structural reform to form balanced development structure. China's reform and opening up will never stop. China is willing to work with the US side to expand mutually beneficial cooperation in finance and economy and advance global and regional economic development and cooperation.

Henry Paulson noted that US-China relations are rather important. The achievements of bilateral cooperation in various fields such as trade and economy, environment and climate change have played a positive role in advancing bilateral relations. In the face of uncertainties in world economy, China's perseverance in comprehensively deepening reform and promoting structural adjustment is admirable. China's further reform and opening up will provide more space and drivers to the economic and trade cooperation between the two countries. It is hoped that the two sides can work together to push ahead with the negotiations on a bilateral investment deal and the constant as well as forward development of US-China relations.

State Councilor Yang Jiechi and others attended the meeting.
