Notice on Chinese Visa Application (Updated on 11st Novmber, 2023)

I. Scope of Accepted Visa Application, Applicable Situation and Documents Required

M-Visa

Economic and trade visits.

Invitation letter from cooperation partners in China.

L-Visa

Travelers to China

Documents showing the itinerary including air ticket booking record (round trip) and proof of a hotel reservation, etc. or an invitation letter issued by a relevant entity(travel agency, etc) or individual(a photo cocy of the ID of the individual is needed) in China. The invitation letter should contain:

1.Information on the applicant (full name, gender, date of birth, etc.);

2.Information on the planned visit (arrival and departure dates, place(s) to be visited, etc.); 

3.Information on the inviting entity or individual (name, contact telephone number, address, official stamp, signature of the legal representative or the inviting individual).

F-Visa

Necessary visits related to education, sports, culture, science and technology purposes, etc.

Invitation letter from related institutions or individuals in China.

Z-Visa

Employment in China.

Valid “Notification Letter of Foreigner’s Work Permit” or “Foreigner’s Work Permit”, etc.

S1-Visa

(long-term)

S2-Visa

(short-term)

Family member (spouse, parent, child under the age of 18, parent-in-law, adult child, spouse of adult child,) of Z/M/F/X1 visa/work  residence permit holder.

*Adult child, spouse of adult child for family member visit (S2) visa shall submit explanation documents accordingly as required by the Embassy.

1.Proof of kinship between the applicant and inviter (such as proof of marriage, marriage certificate, birth certificate.) ;

2.An invitation letter from the inviter;

3.The photocopy of the inviter’s passport and residence permit.

S2-Visa

(emergency humanitarian reason)

Visits for emergency humanitarian reasons such as for arranging funeral matters or visiting a family member in critical medical conditions in China.

*Family members refer to: spouse, parent, parent-in-law, child, spouse of child, brother or sister, grandparent, grandchild.

Identity documents of the deceased or critically ill patient (such as passports, etc.), death certificate or critical illness notice issued by the hospital, and proof of kinship,etc.

Q1-Visa(Family Reunion)

Q2-Visa(Visiting Relatives)

Foreign family member of a Chinese or a foreign national with Chinese permanent residence permit.

*Family members refer to: spouse, parent, parent-in-law, child, spouse of child, brother or sister, grandparent, grandchild.

1.An invitation letter from a Chinese citizen or a foreign citizen holding a Chinese permanent residence permit residing in China;

2.Proof of family member kinship between the applicant and inviter (marriage certificate, birth certificate, certification of kinship issued by public security bureaus, etc.)

3.Proof of Chinese identity from the inviter (such as photocopy of Chinese identity card, Chinese household registration), or photocopy of foreign passport and Chinese permanent residence permit.

R-Visa

High-level talents

"Confirmation Letter of High-Level Foreign Talents"

C-Visa

Crew members

A letter of guarantee issued by a foreign transport company or an invitation letter issued by a relevant entity in China.

G-Visa

Transit via China

Interline ticket to the destination country or region with a confirmed date and seat or letter of guarantee from a foreign shipping company.

W-Visa

(Diplomatic, service or courtesy visa)

Foreigners (and their family members)  who are engaged in diplomatic or official activities or applicants who are qualified to apply for courtesy visas.

Documents needed according to the actual situation.

J1-Visa

Foreign resident journalists of Chinese news organizations (exceeding 180 days)

Visa notification letter issued by the Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China and official letter issued by the media organization for which the journalist works.

J2-Visa

Short-term entry of foreign journalists entering China for news coverage (not exceeding 180 days)

Visa notification letter issued by the Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China or the relevant department/institution and official letter issued by the media organization for which the journalist works.

X1-Visa

Long-term study (exceeding 180 days) in China

1.Original and photocopy of Admission Notice;

2.Original and photocopy of Visa Application for Study in China form (Form JW201 or Form JW202).

X2-Visa

Short-term study (not exceeding 180 days) in China

Original and copy of the acceptance letter issued by the recruiting institution in China.


In addition to the required materials mentioned above, applicants should prepare the following basic documents in advance:

1.Visa Application Form(see following Application Procedures)

2.Original passport with at least six months of remaining validity,blank visa pages, and a photocopy of the bio data page. A photocopy of the previous Chinese visa (if applicable).

3.Other necessary documents required by the Embassy

II. Application Procedures

Visa applicants please log on to China Online Visa Application (COVA) http://cova.cs.mfa.gov.cn and fill in the visa application form online. Applicants are required to submit printed application form (signed on the confirmation page and the last page), passports and all required documents to the Chinese Embassy without the need for an appointment. 

III. Matters Needing Attention

1.The following people can go to China without a Chinese visa:

A.People eligible for Agreement between the Government of the People's Republic of China and the Government of the Republic of Macedonia on Mutual Visa Exemption for Holders of Diplomatic and Service/Official Passports;

B.Foreign nationals with Chinese permanent residence permit;

C.Foreign nationals with valid Chinese residence permits for work, personal matters, foreign journalists and reunion purposes;

D.Foreign nationals with valid Chinese residence permit for studying purpose (since 24th August);

E.Foreign nationals with valid APEC Business Travel Card;

F.Foreign nationals meet the requirements of the following policies:

Hainan visa-free policy, visa-free policy specified for foreign cruise-group-tour through Shanghai Port, Guangdong visa-free policy specified for foreign tour groups from Hong Kong or Macao SAR, and Guangxi visa-free policy specified for foreign tour groups of ASEAN countries. 

2. If the photo uploaded during the online application is not qualified, please re-upload a qualified photo, otherwise the visa applicaiton can’t be processed.

3.In order to avoid invalid application due to unqualified documents, applicants are suggested to send documents required for visa application to skopje@csm.mfa.gov.cn in advance for preview. 

IV. Processing Time 

Normally the Embassy will issue the visa within 3-5 working days. The time required for supplementary materials, verification, force majeure, etc. is not included in the Processing Time.
