Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lu Kang's Remarks on the Latest Development Regarding the Korean Peninsula Nuclear Issue

2018-08-25 23:21

Q: The US side recently claimed that China's attitude towards the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue has changed, which has affected the negotiations between the US and the DPRK to resolve this issue. What is your comment?

A: The US side made these remarks in total disregard of basic facts. We are gravely concerned about this irresponsible act and has lodged stern representations with the US side.

China's position on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue is consistent and clear. We are committed to achieving denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula, maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, and resolving this issue through dialogue and consultation. For all these years, China has been making unremitting efforts for this issue's proper settlement. We have been playing an important and constructive role and comprehensively and strictly implementing the DPRK-related resolutions of the Security Council. All these efforts are witnessed by the international community.

We support the US and the DPRK in actively seeking a political settlement of the Korean Peninsula issue in accordance with the consensus reached by their two leaders at the Singapore summit. The key for all relevant parties at this moment is to stick to the direction of seeking a political settlement, actively engage in contacts and talks, accommodate each other's legitimate concerns, and demonstrate more sincerity and flexibility, rather than flip-flopping and shifting blames to others. Only in this way can we steadily advance the political settlement process of the Korean Peninsula issue.

China will keep in close contact with all relevant parties and continue to play a positive role in realizing denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and enduring stability in East Asia.
