Q: The UN General Assembly has confirmed the nomination by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres based on consensus through consultation and appointed former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet as the next UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. What is your comment?

A: The Chinese side welcomes the UN General Assembly's confirmation of the appointment of Ms. Bachelet as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. We extend congratulations to Ms. Bachelet. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights assumes important responsibilities in promoting and protecting human rights. The Chinese side hopes and believes that after Michelle Bachelet takes office, she will lead the Office of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in fulfilling its missions in an unbiased, objective and non-selective manner, promoting citizens' political rights, economic, social and cultural rights and development rights in a balanced way and further improving global human rights governance. The Chinese side always supports the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the OHCHR in fulfilling their missions under the mandate. We stand ready to work with Ms. Bachelet to deepen bilateral cooperation and promote the sound development of international human rights cause.
