Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lu Kang's Remarks on the Burkina Faso Government's Statement on "Severing Diplomatic Ties" with Taiwan

2018-05-25 00:06

Q: According to reports, the government of Burkina Faso issued a statement on its decision to "sever diplomatic ties" with Taiwan from now on. What is your comment?

A: We have noted the statement by the government of Burkina Faso on cutting the so-called "diplomatic" relations with Taiwan. We appreciate this.

As is known to all, Resolution 2758 adopted at the 26th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in October 1971 has made it clear that the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government that represents the whole of China. The one-China principle recognized by this resolution has become the universal consensus of the international community. The one-China principle involves China's core interests and the sentiment of over 1.3 billion Chinese people, and it is also the prerequisite and political basis for countries around the globe to maintain and develop friendly and cooperative relations with China.

At this point, the China-Africa Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership has maintained sound momentum for development. In September, China will hold the  Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Beijing Summit, which will surely set off a new upsurge of China-Africa friendly cooperation. In recent years, the Gambia and Sao Tome and Principe have normalized their relations with China and returned to the big family of China-Africa friendly cooperation, fully testifying to the fact that the one-China principle conforms to the shared aspiration of the people and constitutes an irresistible trend of the times. We welcome Burkina Faso's return to the big family of China-Africa friendly cooperation on the basis of the one-China principle at an early date.
