Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Geng Shuang's Remarks

2017-08-02 23:57

Q: On July 30, Venezuela held the election of the members of the National Constituent Assembly, which was met with strong boycott from the opposition party. Some countries announced or threatened to impose sanctions. What is your comment on that?

A: We have noted that the National Constituent Assembly election in Venezuela was held smoothly on the whole. We have also taken note of the reactions of relevant parties. China always follows the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries and maintains that countries should handle their relations based on the principles of equal treatment, mutual respect and non-interference in each other's internal affairs. We sincerely hope that relevant parties in Venezuela can hold peaceful dialogues within the legal framework and resolve relevant issues in an orderly manner so as to maintain national stability and economic and social development. China believes that the Venezuelan government and people are capable of handling their internal affairs. It serves the interests of all relevant parties for Venezuela to maintain stable development.
